Hausbibel des Seidenstickers Hans Plock

Albrecht Henkys (Ed.), Claudine Moulin (Ed.)

The 1541 edition of Luther's works, now in the possession of the Berlin City Museum and formerly owned by the Mainz silk embroiderer Hans Plock, represents a unique testament to the Reformation era. In his personal engagement with the social upheavals of his time, Plock added marginalia, textual and pictorial supplements, and colored material to the book's margins and on separately inserted leaves. Among these additions are contemporary drawings, engravings, and illustrations, including works by Matthias Grünewald, Albrecht Dürer, and Lucas Cranach the Elder.

Plock's handwritten annotations and diary-like recollections, which constitute a multifaceted personal document, are of particular value. This interdisciplinary volume brings together contributions from various fields, including German studies, (religious) history, art history, and book restoration, and reveals new approaches to understanding this complex book and its owner.
