Handbuch des deutschen Barockromans
Deutsche Originalromane und Übersetzungen des 17. Jahrhunderts
Volker Meid
The German novel of the seventeenth century is rooted in developments within the more advanced literary traditions of Southern and Western Europe. The gradual adoption of international narrative models only relatively late gave rise to original German novels that, while drawing upon established forms, simultaneously reveal distinctive national and historical characteristics. The present handbook traces these developments.
Through more than 200 individual entries, it surveys and characterizes German novel production of the period in chronological order. A substantial introduction places the texts within the broader context of seventeenth-century novel history, addressing literary production, poetics, and genres.
