Bibliophilie
Ernst Fischer
A multi-perspective, scientifically sound overview of all aspects of bibliophilia
Bibliophilia – the love of books that manifests itself in book collecting – looks back on a long tradition and presents itself in the present as a broadly diversified landscape.
This book provides book lovers and those interested in books with comprehensive knowledge about all aspects of bibliophilia. Originating from an engagement with G.A.E. Bogeng's introduction to bibliophilia (1931), it approaches the topic on four levels: It explains key questions and current trends, traces the basic outlines of the history of book collecting, gives a detailed overview of the multitude of collecting areas, and addresses those design and material elements that make the book a sensory and aesthetic object. Rich in information and inspiration, it will, as a new standard work, give lasting impetus to the discussion about bibliophilia and the joy of books.
Ernst Fischer (born 1951 in Vienna) was a professor of book studies at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz from 1993 to 2014 after receiving his habilitation in Munich; after several years of service on the board of the Maximilian Society, he has been chairman of the Vienna Bibliophile Society since 2018.
