Much anticipated Paris Rare Book Fair at Grand Palais opens this week
Everyone is waiting impatiently for the 32nd edition of the Paris Rare Book Fair, which was initially scheduled for 24-26 April and will be the first event in the rare book trade since the New York Book Fair was held at the beginning of March.
95% of the exhibitors who had signed up in April have renewed their contract including a large number European booksellers, making it a total of 160 exhibitors during these challenging times.
The Fair will also be one of the first events of the new season and the organisers will ensure the health and safety of the exhibitors and visitors with a special layout.
GUEST OF HONOUR 2020: THE FRENCH FILM LIBRARY
This year's Guest of Honour will be the Cinémathèque Française, presenting a selection of its collections, one of the most important in the world on cinema. A first section will highlight the "pre-cinema" and the founding fathers of French and world cinema around Gaumont, Pathé and Méliès, of which it has the largest collection in the world. The exhibition will also focus on the avant-garde of the 1920s, the true golden age for beauty, art and design. A third part will be devoted to
to the Nouvelle Vague. The exhibition will also showcase illustrators, notably thanks to the collection of posters from the Cinémathèque Française, with 22,000 catalogued and digitised documents.
THE ENTIRE CHAIN OF THE BOOK TRADE IN ONE VENUE
Besides its 160 rare booksellers, the Salon du Livre Rare also brings together other key players of the book trade: bookbinders and publishers, the Parisian "bouqinistes", the booksellers on the quays of the river Seine, bibliophile associations including "Les Cent une", the only association in the world of women bibliophiles, the Friends of Art Bookbinding, the assoiation of Book Villages, Les Villages du Livre, the Artegraf association which will offer demonstrations in bookbinding and printing processes, as well as the French National Printing Press.
The Paris Rare Book Fair takes place under the patronage of France's president, Mr. Emmanuel Macron, is organised by the French antiquarian booksellers association, SLAM (Syndicat national de la Librairie Ancienne et Moderne) and sanctioned by ILAB (the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers) and sees over 20,000 visitors each year, making it one of the key events in the rare book trade and one of the key events worldwide for any bibliophile.
