La producción de libros en la penitenciaría de Lima (1907-1961)

Reino de Almagro

In 1907, the printing workshop at the Lima Penitentiary began operating. Its creation was part of a penal therapy program that included prison labor as a central element; at the same time, it aimed to satisfy the demand for printed materials from various state agencies. A few years later, and for more than a decade, its presses and operators would become decisive protagonists in Peruvian publishing and literary history. Important books such as Abraham Valdelomar's *El Caballero Carmelo*, José María Eguren's *La canción de las figuras*, and César Vallejo's *Trilce*, to name a few, were printed there.

Carlos Aguirre and William Fisher attempt to answer these questions by exploring the material conditions of production and circulation of these books, the interconnected trajectories of the agents involved (authors, printers, linotypists, prisoner-workers, authorities), and the role of the printed word in the relationships between the prisoners, their conditions of incarceration, and the other protagonists of this story.
