Johann Heinrich Ramberg: Wielands Oberon

Frank Zöllner

Johann Heinrich Ramberg is considered one of the most important book illustrators in German art history, whose work was formative for the reception of German authors around 1800. A major focus of his artistic output is the impressive body of drawings for works by Christoph Martin Wieland, particularly his epic poem 'Oberon'. Alexander Rosenbaum and Peter-Henning Haischer's study of Ramberg's Oberon cycle from 1803 examines Ramberg's engagement with Wieland's poetry and, based on the largely unpublished drawings—exemplified by the supplementary volume to the Ossmannstedt edition of Wieland's works—develops an editorial concept for work-related illustration corpora.
