Erich Kästner is as prominent and consistently present in the book market as no other German-language author of his generation, yet his oeuvre has only been rudimentarily documented. "The Books of Erich Kästner" aims to change that: This catalogue of works, complete with a bibliography of primary literature, meticulously traces the history of each individual title and, with the help of numerous color illustrations, shows how many editions and printings of Kästner's books have been published worldwide to date and how their appearance, design, and features have changed over the decades. The corpus under consideration is enormous: It comprises more than 2,500 editions in German-speaking countries alone; in addition, there are over 5,000 foreign editions. The books of Erich Kästner are therefore structured in six parts: Volumes 1 and 2 cover the major works published in individual editions, from *Herz auf Taille* to *Der Kleine Mann und die Kleine Miss*; volumes 3 and 4 cover the translations, which have appeared in approximately 75 countries and languages; and volumes 5 and 6 cover the minor works, such as anthologies, collected editions, and special printings, as well as school editions, radio plays, readings, and musical adaptations. The present first volume, in two parts, is dedicated to the German-language editions of the major works published between 1928 and 1933 – from *Herz auf Taille* to *Das fliegende Klassenzimmer*.
