Stockholm Hosts Scandinavia’s Leading Rare Book Fair

This weekend of March 14 - 15, the Swedish Antiquarian Booksellers Association (SVAF) will host its fair, the Stockholm Bookmässa, at the historic Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in central Stockholm.

Around forty rare booksellers, bookbinders, publishers, and book-related firms will gather to present and sell books, manuscripts, maps, prints, and other materials that celebrate the enduring world of the physical book.

SVAF has organized its book fair in Stockholm since the late 1950s. The first fair took place in Ostermans marmorhallar in 1959, and over the decades both the regularity and the venues have changed. In recent years, however, the fair has found a welcoming home in the impressive halls of the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, located just steps from the Royal Palace and the historic district of Gamla Stan.

The Academy, founded in 1735, is one of Sweden’s oldest cultural institutions. Its elegant galleries and skylit exhibition spaces provide a fitting setting for a fair dedicated to the craftsmanship, history, and artistry of books. Situated on Fredsgatan in the heart of the Swedish capital, the venue places visitors within walking distance of Stockholm’s major cultural landmarks, museums, libraries, and historic bookshops.

Stockholm itself has long been a city of books and literature. Home to the Swedish Academy, which awards the Nobel Prize in Literature, the city has always played a central role in the international literary world. Its network of bookshops, libraries, publishers, writers, and scholars has created a vibrant literary culture that continues to flourish today.

Over time, the Stockholm Book Fair has evolved from a purely antiquarian fair focused on rare and early books into a broader meeting place for everyone engaged in the culture of the physical book. Antiquarian booksellers remain at the core, and visitors can still find “books and pictures from all times.” But the fair now also welcomes bookbinders, book-related associations, rare book libraries, book auction houses, and small independent publishers producing beautifully crafted works on specialized and often unexpected subjects.

“Hosting the Stockholm Book Fair is something we are immensely proud of,” says Simon Ström, President of the Swedish Antiquarian Booksellers Association. “A great deal of work and dedication from many people within the association has gone into making this event possible, and we are delighted to welcome exhibitors and visitors once again to the beautiful halls of the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts. The fair has a long tradition and plays an important role not only for Sweden but for the antiquarian book world across Scandinavia. It is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the physical book in all its forms and to bring together booksellers, collectors, scholars, and everyone who shares a passion for books.”

For all book lovers, Stockholm's Bookmässa offers a rare opportunity to explore the many facets of the book world, from centuries-old manuscripts and early prints to contemporary fine press editions and handcrafted bindings, and continues to serve as one of the most important meeting places for the antiquarian book trade in Northern Europe.
