Rue du Bemel 23
Together with his Brussels-born fiancée Anny Antoine (1897-1933), the industrialist Louis Koopman (1887-1968) brought together one of the best and most beautiful collections of twentieth-century European literature and artist’s books. During his life, he donated the collection to the Koninklijke Bibliotheek in The Hague, the national library of the Netherlands. Seventy masterpieces have been chosen from the 10,000 items in the collection, taking into account the texts, the importance of the authors, the artists’ genius, the quality and the rarity. Among them we find René Char illustrated by Míro, André Rouveyre illustrated by Matisse, and Pierre Reverdy illustrated by Picasso.
