For more than thirty years, Michael Graves-Johnston has sourced the finest examples of books, manuscripts and photographs in the fields of Africana, Oceania and Egyptology for many important public and private collections including the National Museum of African Art at the Smithsonian, Washington, the British Library, London, the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, and the American University in Cairo.  Michael Graves-Johnston has himself travelled extensively throughout western Africa. This seminar will bring together all his wealth of experience in dealing with books and other material relating to the wider world beyond Europe and non-western civilisations.

The seminars on various aspects of book collecting are held regularly on the second Tuesday of each month of the academic year at the University of London’s Senate House in central London. Organised jointly by the Institute of English Studies (London University) and the Rare Book Society, the speakers are all drawn from among the leading booksellers, academics, historians and collectors. The seminars are aimed at a broad audience including bookcollectors, antiquarian booksellers, historians, librarians, and anyone with an interest in collecting.
