The exhibition documents the life of the (failed) younger  brother of Emperor Franz Joseph. Ferdinand Maximilian (1832-1867) stood in the shadow of the Austrian emperor. No wonder that he accepted Napoleon III.'s offer to become Emperor of Mexico in 1863. As Maximilian I., he traveled to Mexico in 1864 to ascend the throne, but was captured and executed in 1867. The exhibition shows Maximilian as a collector and looks at his interest in architecture and seafaring, and features numerous letters, items of furniture as well as documents from the life of Maximilian and his wife Charlotte.
