An unparalleled collection of old, modern and contemporary bindings! Michel Wittock built up a unique collection of historical and artistic bindings of all periods from the Renaissance to the present day. To highlight its treasures he founded the Bibliotheca Wittockiana, a private institution which has become a centre and a museum of international reputation. The Wittock collection is the heart of the Bibliotheca Wittockiana, and the present exhibition. Also on show: pieces from the Valere-Gille Fund with all its manuscripts and correspondences reflecting the cultural and literary history of La Jeune Belgique, almost all the books inspired by the poetry of Pierre Lecuire from the Fund Lucien Bonaparte, and a selection from the other archives held at the Wittockiana containing masterpieces of bookbinding which were designed outside Belgium (mainly in France) over the last five centuries.
