During his lifetime, Emile Verhaeren enjoyed a European reputation: his poems were translated into several European languages, he travelled to France, Germany, Britain, Russia, many writers and artists were among his friends including Stefan Zweig, Rainer Maria Rilke, Auguste Rodin, Andre Gide, Maurice Maeterlinck, Théo Van Rysselberghe and Paul Signac. Verhaeren embodied the idea of ​​a European culture and he even wrote a poem about genuine Europe. The exhibition presents a collection of rare books, illustrated editions, photographs and documents that illustrate the European dimension of Verhaeren's life and work.
