At the beginning of the 20th century The Eight (Róbert Berény, Dezső Czigány, Béla Czóbel, Károly Kernstok, Ödön Márffy, Dezső Orbán, Bertalan Pór, Lajos Tihanyi) were inspired by French Modern art. Their exhibition in Budapest in 1909 was a turning point in the history of Hungarian art, because the works of The Eight adapted the modern international trends of that time. They drew inspiration from the Fauves - Matisse and Cézanne. Their shows accompanied by cultural events  with the participation of such artists and thinkers as Endre Ady, Béla Bartók, Zoltán Kodály, and György Lukács.
