For the 12th edition of its Book History Workshop, the Lyon-based Institut d’histoire du livre is offering 3 advanced courses in the fields of book and printing history, taught by Neil Harris, François Vinourd and Claudio Galleri with Eléonore Litim.

This course explores different types of bookbindings - European and non-European - according to their structure, materials used and their decoration. The course will be conducted around the three following axes: 1) study of the methods so to be able to date and locate the place of production of the binding, either original or subsequent, along with a detailed presentation of the available evidence enabling the identification of original bindings; 2) explanation of the mechanism of workmanship of bindings by describing with precision the different stages involved and presentation of the origins and the influences of the major techniques; 3) description of bookbindings: presentation of vocabulary and of IT solutions currently used to manage this data; compilation of descriptive entries.
