Bloomsbury Philobiblon is glad to introduce you to the auction One thousand five hundred 16th Century Books: a wide overview, Italian and European, about the main century for modern publishing, when –after its dawning in the Fifteenth Century-, this phenomenon exploded and transformed in various levels, qualitative and quantitative, reaching peaks nowadays unattainable. With 879 lots, -for a total amount of 1500 volumes-, this auction not only seems like a proper journey among the main typographies of XVI century, but also offers to each bibliophile and collector extraordinary and rare works, coming –most of them- from two important private libraries. Vast number, themes and contents variety constitute One thousand five hundred 16th Century Books distinguishing features: religious and devotional volumes, travel and geographic books, scientific woks (medicine, astronomy, agronomy…), main prose or poetry Italian and international literature compositions, classic greek and latin works –often in their first translations in vulgaris-, legal-economic and socio-politic essays, ancient philosophy cornerstones and specific and characteristic works from XVI century, such as those concerning Catholic-Reformation and Concilium Tridentinum. Among the most representative and rare volumes from those century, our auction includes the collection of scientific essays inaugurated by Proclus Diochus De Sphaera (Basel, 1561; lot 685), in the special expanded edition curated by Marcus Hopper and enriched with 24 maps; the first work about Giuoco del Calcio Fiorentino, in its original edition composed by Giovanni Bardi (Florence, 1580; lot 79); an interesting miscellany containing three very rare French early editions including The Vespucci’s Account of His Voyages (lot 853); Marcolini’s Ingeniose Sorti definitive edition (Venice, 1550, lot 545); l’Humore, a dialogue written by Bartolomeo Taegio, here in his first impression (Milan, 1564; lot 788): first book ever entirely dedicated to vinification and grapevine cultivation. We have some of the most important editions from Italian literature masterpieces: Dante’s Commedia with critical review by Landino and Vellutello (lot 23); Orlando Furioso (lots 46, 48); Francesco Petrarca’s works (lot 632-633); Giovanni Boccaccio (lots 113, 114); Pietro Bembo (lots 93, 94) Gian Giorgio Trissino (lots 829-830). Essential to rebuilt sixteenth century typography paths are some precious rare documents such as official public announcements (lots 65, 67, 72-75, 346) or Papal letters and bulls (lots 227-229, 232, 233, 742), examples of an affirmed typographic art applied to administrative and institutional organs (both civil and religious) and their related legislative and penal activity. Minutely documented is therefore all the production coming from the main printers and centres of XVI century, in Italy and around Europe: in Venice, Aldo Manuzio’s refined workshop beside Giolito de Ferrari’s widespread and popular one, Giunti’s various production in Florence, the rich and wide offer from Bologna, the roman printing peculiarity inextricably linked to the Holy See, the Estienne work in Paris and the Griphyus in Lyon, the fervent experiences of Basel, Antwerp, Cologne, Frankfurt – without excluding brilliant episodes located just on the edge of the main capitals, such as Tusculum and Rua.
