November Book Fairs 2013

A catalogue produced to showcase our exhibits at the Sydney Rare Book Fair (University of New South Wales, November 8 - 10, 2013) and the Boston International Antiquarian Book Fair (Hynes Convention Center, November 15 - 17, 2013).

Highlights include Dammann's Ethnological photographic gallery of the various races of men (1876), one of the earliest photographic works on ethnology; the manuscript journal of Alexander Barnett, written on the Major's Creek gold diggings near Braidwood, New South Wales, in 1852; the archive of William Hughan, a serviceman on board HMAS Sydney during its final months in 1940-41; a very fine set of the deluxe edition of Spenser's Faerie Queene, illustrated by Walter Crane; a first edition copy, including the accompanying maps in slipcase, of Leichhardt's Journal of an overland expedition in Australia from Moreton Bay to Port Essington (1847); the printer's copy of Margaret Preston Recent Paintings 1929, which includes an original colour woodcut by Preston; a leaf from the Gutenberg Bible; two letters written on board the last female convict transport, Duchess of Northumberland, which sailed from London to Van Diemen's Land in 1852; and the unique prototype for George Hamilton's The horse : its treatment in Australia (1864), the first Australian publication to use real photographs as illustrations. The catalogue also includes an interesting selection of early voyages, nineteenth century photography, rare works on or by Australian artists (Whiteley; Lindsay; Coburn; Friend), nineteenth century ephemera and children's books.
