By Ed Smith
Here in Seattle, Washington local ABAA/ILAB booksellers Ed Smith, Taylor Bowie, John Lang, and many others, as well as at least one representative from the Northwest Copyright Society of the USA, will be on hand to present a display and sale of antiquarian books, maps, and prints, as well as ephemera. Recognizing the important place that books hold in the dissemination of knowledge, they will continue the work of their colleagues around the world to fill a "virtual bookcase" as participants and visitors donate money to buy books for schools in South Sudan. Informal "pop-up" talks on the items on displace will fill the evening, starting at 4 pm, at the beautiful Sorrento Hotel, a Seattle icon, that offers personalized service, Italianate architecture and a warm, welcoming feel that makes you want to stay even longer.
As Seattle’s first and longest-operating boutique hotel, the Sorrento is equally home to artists, intellectuals, business travelers and the Seattle neighbors. It is located in Seattle’s historic First Hill neighborhood, just a short distance from downtown Seattle and the Washington State Convention Center. A favorite for traditions and celebrations – weddings, anniversaries, family reunions – the hotel has an original, authentic quality that makes events on topics such as music, literary, food & drink and fireside chats even more special. The perfect place for one of nearly 20 ILAB Pop Up Book Fair on UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day across the world!
We don't have to tell you how great Seattle is, or its environs, we just might mention the home of the Seahawks and Mariners, Microsoft, Boeing, an historically great music scene – where Jimi Hendrix was born and Ray Charles played his first piano lines -, The Seattle Aquarium, University of Washington, The Space Needle, the Great Wheel at Colman Dock, Starbucks, the EMP Museum, The Seattle Art Museum, the Tate Museum, Bill Gate's house, home of the Seattle Antiquarian Book Fair, Pike Place Market, Pioneer Square, the Hugo House, Seattle Waterfall Garden, the Arboretum, the stylish Seattle Public Library, Puget Sound, the San Juan Islands, the largest and best ferry system in the United States, Seattle Asian Art Museum, and hundreds more sights and sounds of this great Pacific Northwest city.
